Linen Closet Organization

Of course it’s easy to have an organized linen closet when you have a fully adjustable custom closet system and all new white towels, but the reality is, most of the linen closets we organize are real. They are overflowing with towels, sheets and random storage items that need a place to go—sound familiar? You may not be able to achieve the picture perfect linen closet, but with these steps, you can make a significant improvement!

  1. Purge: Don’t just look in your closet and say, “yep, I need it all.” Go shelf by shelf. Bring everything off of the shelf and only put back what you know you need. Make a pile for donation (animal shelters love getting extra towels) and another for trash. Maybe there is someone in particular you can give items to—make sure to create a stack for them as well. When you know where things are going, it makes it much easier to eliminate.

  2. Place: Decide how you want the closet set up. Can you add a custom laminate fully adjustable shelving system? That’s always optimal, but not always realistic. Whatever the setup, decide where the towels will go, then the sheets, then the random items that have nowhere else to go. Have a zone in mind for like items.

  3. Contain: Once your purging and placing is done and items are in their “zones”, you may realize that a basket or cute labeled container is in order for toiletries, rags and overflow items. The containers are the icing on the cake. The last step. So often people get fixated on the cute containers and the space looses optimal function in lieu of pretty containers. Opt for the function—in a linen closet the picture doesn’t matter as much as making the most out of every inch of space.
