Organize Your Closet By Color
An organized closet saves time, reduces stress, and makes outfit planning easier. Recently, a client asked how we determine the best color order for hanging clothes. While we customize every closet at Chaos To Order, these steps will help you create a functional and visually appealing system:
1. Sort by Type
Group clothes into categories like tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear. Organizing by type sets a strong foundation.
2. Arrange by Color
Within each category, sort clothes by color. Choose the method that works best for you:
Light to Dark: Start with white or light shades and move toward darker hues.
Most Used First: Place your go-to colors, like black or white, where they’re easy to reach.
For example, in my closet, I keep white and black at the front for layering, then move into grays, browns, and brighter colors, blending similar hues.
3. Tailor to Your Needs
Your system should reflect how you use your wardrobe. If you love bright colors, a rainbow (ROYGBIV) order might work, with neutrals added where they make sense.
4. Update Seasonally
Rotate seasonal items to the front of your closet and reassess your system as your wardrobe changes.
5. Maintain Your System
Consistency is key. Spend a few minutes each week returning items to their proper place.
