The Holiday Help List: Stop Doing Everything Yourself

“Let me know what I can do.”

It’s a welcome offer, but figuring out how someone can help often feels like another task. So you say, “I’ve got it,” and keep juggling.

This holiday season, make sharing the work part of your plan.

Make the invisible work visible
Write down what your gathering requires, including the easily forgotten details: confirming arrival times, checking dietary needs, buying ice, and planning for leftovers. Seeing the whole list makes it easier to identify what someone else could handle.

Hand over a whole job
“Help with drinks” still leaves you managing the details. Try: “Would you bring drinks and ice for twelve people by three?” A clear responsibility gives someone the chance to follow through independently.

Ask before the busy day
Make specific requests while everyone has time to plan. Ask one person to coordinate desserts, another to arrange transportation, and a few others to handle cleanup. You’ll spend less time directing traffic when guests arrive.

Allow a different approach
Be clear about essentials such as allergies and timing, then give people flexibility. The napkins may look different, and the dessert may be store-bought. Accepting those differences is part of accepting help.

Finally, consider what can leave the list entirely. Keep the traditions you enjoy and simplify the obligations that drain you.

You deserve to be part of the celebration, too.
