How to Work From Home with the Kids around in the Summer
- Are the kids home and driving you crazy yet? This summer, the kids are around much more, so intrusions and distractions abound. There are many different scenarios with little ones of different ages, but these tips will help work get done without the guilt of closing the office door on the kids.
Plan "special" time.
It doesn't have to be a full day, but an hour or so around lunch can actually help productivity in the long run. Kids will have something to look forward to and the guilt meter will lower.
Special activities with "conditions."
We all have to get work done before we can go somewhere fun -- so should the kids. Motivation to do chores increases when a fun reward awaits, so make a list of expected tasks (age appropriate of course). The kids may not do it as well, but it'll keep them busy and at least something will get done.
Work in an out-of-the way space.
Having an office on the main floor near an entryway is a recipe for disaster. Move to an out-of-the way place like a basement (which is cooler in the summer). It's quieter with less interruptions.
Play "bring your kids to work."
If there is an old computer around that the kids can use for playing games, set it up right in the office. If they are able to play quietly, they can spend some time "working" nearby.
Change your working hours.
With the kids home, count on the fact that there are plenty of distractions. Plan uninterrupted work time either early in the morning or late at night to ensure time will be available for the kids during the day. Also, carve out some together-quiet-time so work gets done and deadlines are met.
Get organized
Schedule an appointment with an expert organizer from Chaos To Order. We will clear the clutter and set up good efficient systems. Getting organized enhances productivity and efficiency, allowing more quality time with the kids.
Kid swap
Make plans with a friend nearby to swap play dates. This will be fun for the kids as well as a way to squeeze in some quality work time.
Remember, the work is always around, but kids grow up quickly. Prioritize and make an effort to have fun with yours this summer!
